The construction of overpasses at thickly populated townships like Vallalar, Alamelumangapuram, Ocheri, Kaveripakkam, Poottuthacku and Poigai and important junctions such as the RTO Office Road-Gangaiamman Koil junction in Vellore, Pallikonda and Ambur on Chennai-Bangalore National Highway in Vellore district, installation of traffic lights and rumblers (speed-breakers) to avoid hit-and-run cases and high-speed accidents and installation of adequate lighting at ‘hot spots’ or ‘accident-prone zones’ to improve visibility of drivers are among the demands made by the Trauma Care and Road Safety (T-CARS) Trust, Vellore, in a memorandum submitted by its general secretary Franco Benedict to Vellore Collector P. Sankar on Thursday.
Mr. Benedict pointed out that the overpasses were essential to enable pedestrians to safely cross the National Highway. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of accidents and consequently the number of deaths in such accidents in the last several weeks owing to the increase in traffic involving heavy vehicles, especially lorries and container lorries carrying accessories to factories in Sriperumbudur. Accidents are also caused by sand-laden lorries.
The Trust also demanded the establishment of lorry parking bays at two locations along the four-lane highway where lorries and container vehicles can be parked safely and the drivers of those vehicles could also take rest, especially during nights. The Trust also wanted high-mast lights to be installed for every 100 feet along the entire stretch of the highway as has been done near user fee plazas in Pallikonda and Walajapet.
