Venugopal, editor and owner of a Channapatna-based newspaper, and his car driver, Jagadish, were allegedly attacked by a group of lawyers at the parking lot of the City Civil Court complex premises here on Thursday.

The attackers damaged Mr. Venugopal’s car and dragged him to the Ulsoorgate police station where the sub-inspector arrested the journalist and sent him to jail. Despite the intervention of senior police officers, the journalist could not be set free as no lawyer was ready to provide him legal aid. The attack, was allegedly triggered when Mr. Venugopal’s driver parked his car in the multi-level parking lot of the court complex. Noticing the ‘Press’ sticker, a group of lawyers allegedly started roughing up the driver without any provocation. When Mr. Venugopal tried to save his employee, he too was attacked.

According to sources, the lawyers demanded to see Mr. Venugopal’s ID card, and when he couldn’t produce it, they dragged him to the Ulsoorgate police station and filed a case of impersonation against him.

The jurisdictional sub-inspector arrested the editor. A departmental inquiry would be ordered against him, the police said.
