The Madurai Corporation has started enumeration work for the Sixth Economic Census on Tuesday.

Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa and Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal inaugurated the economic census activity at a function held at N. M. S. Muthulakshmi Girls Higher Secondary School on Kamarajar Salai where census kits were handed over to the enumerators.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that this census holds lot of significance in chalking out planning for the country’s development. The State Government too has been able to implement lot of free schemes for the people only based on statistical data. The economic census will take in to account all establishments starting from small units to large business houses. He told the enumerators to be careful while collecting data.

Mr. Nanthagopal said that the census is the basis for preparing the country’s five-year plans and it helps in knowing the status of development. Deputy Commissioner in-charge Chinnammal, Assistant Commissioner A. Devadoss and Deputy Director of Statistics Department Hariharadas were among those who participated.
