A sub-inspector attached to the Chettippalayam police station, Balakrishnan (56), was caught red-handed on Wednesday by officers of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday while accepting a bribe of Rs. 5,000 in an accident case.

The DVAC sleuths laid a trap following a complaint that the sub-inspector had demanded Rs. 8,000 as bribe from Kumaresan, owner of a lorry, for letting his driver Sivakumar on bail and for handing over the original papers of the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and the lorry was seized, after it was involved in an accident. The SI is said to have finally agreed for Rs. 5,000 for releasing the driver and giving back the papers.

The SI was caught when the money was handed over at the police station on Wednesday.
