Tuticorin: K.P. Shanmuga Rajeswaran, DIG, Tirunelveli Range, along with a team of police personnel, visited a private hospital here on Saturday, where the injured police personnel including the Vilathikulam DSP, Loyola Ignatius, and three other police constables are undergoing treatment following violence in a procession taken out as part of the Veerapandia Kattabomman festival organised at Panchalakurichi on Friday evening.

After enquiring about the health condition of the injured, Mr. Rajeswaran said that a special team had been formed and the investigation was on. The team would keep a close watch on suspicious movement of vehicles and track down the offenders to take action against the perpetrators.

Mr. Ignatius, who suffered cut injuries, and other constables who had been injured were recuperating, he said. Violence erupted when a group pelted stones at a vehicle, in which those participating in the rally were travelling, near Kurukusalai on the way to Panchalakurichi. Following the incident, the people who took part in the procession resorted to road blockade for some time near Kurukusalai demanding action against the offenders.

Mr. Rajeswaran, along with the Superintendent of Police, Tuticorin, T. Senthil Kumar and other police personnel rushed to the spot, pacified the agitating members and dispersed the crowd.

The movement of vehicles was paralysed and traffic came to a halt for sometime during the incident.
