ERODE: Drumstick farmers incurred a loss of Rs. 5 a kg in the weekly shandy on Tuesday.Dharapuram drumsticks are auctioned every Tuesday, which is resold at Oddanchatram and other shandies where merchants from Chennai and Andhra Pradesh buy them. Every week a minimum of 300 bags of 50 kg each arrive at the shandy.
This Tuesday, more than 400 arrived at the market. The fine variety was sold at Rs. 8.50 a kg as against Rs. 14 a kg sold 15 days back.
The second variety was sold at Rs. 7 a kg as against the Rs. 12 a kg fetched 15 days back.
Farmers said the fall in prices was because of the heavy arrival of the product. They expect it to go up by Rs. 2 a kg next week. The farmers asked the Government to start a drumstick powder unit at Vellakoil, Moolanure or at Dharapuram.
