Local body representatives of various panchayats and residents staged a demonstration here on Thursday in protest against a move to bifurcate Ottapidaram taluk.

M.C. Shanmugiah, councillor, Ottapidaram Panchayat Union, who led the agitation, said the move to form a new taluk at Kayatar after bifurcation of 13 village panchayats in the revenue firca of Vanchi Maniyachi and Parivallikottai would pave the way for communal disharmony.

The district administration should give up the proposal to bifurcate the Ottapidaram taluk.

Tuticorin district has eight taluks including Tuticorin, Kovilpatti, Ottapidaram, Vilathikulam, Srivaikuntam, Tiruchendur, Sathankulam and Ettayapuram and three revenue divisions including Tuticorin, Kovilpatti and Tiruchendur.

When contacted, Collector Ashish Kumar said that “the move was only at preliminary stage and officials were studying the ground reality.” Petitions against the move were received, he added.
