Plan to take out pada yatras to all local bodies
TAMBARAM: After a day-long protest meeting against land acquisition for the proposed Chennai airport modernisation programme, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists decided to take out pada yatras to all local bodies covered in the expansion project and to urge them to convene grama sabha (village council) meetings to oppose the decision.
During the protest meeting at Pallavaram on Friday, speakers said elected representatives of the local bodies and grama sabha members could pass a resolution against land acquisition for airport modernisation. Both the State and Central governments must abide by such a resolution, they claimed. While the meetings cannot be convened immediately with the model code of conduct being in force in the State, they could be held any day after voting or counting of votes, the speakers said. They also referred to a resolution passed by the Pozhichalur panchayat in July last year against any land acquisition scheme. The elected ward members of the panchayat got together during a routine meeting of the local body and unanimously voted against giving away land for any project. The resolution (subject No. 25) was passed following rumours that land in Pozhichalur would be taken away for an expansion project. It also appealed to the State Government to drop any move to acquire land from within the jurisdiction of Pozhichalur.
