Drivers operating auto rickshaws and taxis from Kottar Railway Station in Nagercoil participated in the dawn to dusk strike called by their unions on Thursday to protest against the hike in parking fee announced recently by the Southern Railway.
The Southern Railway used to collect Rs. 750 for auto rickshaws and Rs. 1, 500 for taxis for every six months in order to operate it on rental basis from Kottar Railway Station. However, the Southern Railway hiked the amount from Rs. 750 to Rs. 3,600 and from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 5,400 for auto rickshaws and taxis respectively.
Protesting against the sudden hike in parking fee around 150 auto rickshaws and 35 taxi drivers did not operate their vehicles from Kottar Railway Station and urged the Southern Railway authorities to withdraw the hiked parking fee.
The railway passengers were put in to hardship owing to the non-operation of autos and taxis from the railway station.
