Minister for Slum Clearance appeals to philanthropists
RAMANATHAPURAM: S. Thangavelan, Minister for Slum Clearance, has appealed to the philanthropists of Kilakarai to donate land for constructing houses for slum dwellers.
Speaking at a function held at Kilakarai near here on Monday after inaugurating an extended office building donated by the Mohamed Sathak Trust for Kilakarai municipality, he said his Ministry had planned to construct apartment type houses for housing slum dwellers in Kilakarai town limit. Since there was no suitable government land available in the town limit, he was exploring other options to get the land.
The philanthropists of Kilakarai could support the government move for the good cause that aimed at serving the poor. Several beneficiaries belonging to minorities could get good houses.
Mr. Thangavelan said the State government had brought many schemes to the district ever since it took over the reigns in 2006. Cauvery water to all people of the district at a cost of around Rs.600 crore, underground drainage project for Ramanathapuram town, and east coast road were among the important schemes.
It had planned to construct two check dams at a cost of Rs.29 crore at Pagai Venri near Kalari and Perumpacherry near R.S. Mangalam. Though the government had cancelled UGD schemes for several towns due to administrative and technical reasons, it had not cancelled the scheme for Kilakarai town.
