PERAMBALUR: About 300 doctors, para-medical personnel and administrative staff attached to the Government hospitals and primary health centres in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts staged a demonstration at the campus of the Government Headquarters Hospital here on Monday, demanding immediate police action against the person who allegedly attacked a doctor last week.

A doctor, Ramesh, who was inspecting a residential area near here last week following the incidence of dengue cases, was allegedly attacked by a group of persons. Irked over the doctor’s advice to keep the vicinity free from polluted and stagnant waters, the resident, Muthiah, had allegedly attacked him.

Doctors, said that stern action under the ‘Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Protection Act’ should be initiated against Muthiah. Tight police security was provided near the Hospital. The Superintendent of Police Prem Anand Sinha, who came to the hospital, explained the action being taken by the police. He said about 15 persons had been arrested so far. Special teams had been formed to arrest Muthiah, he said.
