A 70-year-old doctor was arrested on Thursday on charges of assaulting a sub-inspector of police at a private hospital in Teynampet.

According to police sources, Karunanidhi (70) allegedly prevented sub-inspector Aasaithambi from performing his duties at the hospital on Wednesday. Mr. Aasaithambi had gone to the hospital a few hours before the visit of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to inspect security arrangements when the altercation occured. The Chief Minister had visited the hospital on Wednesday to meet one of the patients. Based on the complaint by the sub inspector, Dr. Karunanidhi was arrested by Teynampet police, produced in Saidapet Court, remanded to judicial custody and sent to Puzhal prison.

Dr. Karunanidhi is the personal physician of the patient and is not on the rolls of the private hospital.

The altercation occurred when the cop went to the hospital a few hours before the visit of the Chief Minister
