People should welcome and encourage the efforts

Udhagamandalam: Efforts being made to implement schemes for the welfare of the economically weaker sections of the society should not be criticized, said the Khadi Board Minister K. Ramachandran while presiding over the Tamil New Year and Samathuva Pongal celebrations organized by the Nilgiris District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (NDCMPU) here on Wednesday.

On the contrary, the efforts should be welcomed and encouraged, he said.

Recalling that when schemes like the colour television and rice for Rs. 2 were announced, eyebrows were raised, he pointed out that they were being implemented successfully.

Similarly, the Kalaignar Veetu Kattum Scheme will also be implemented without a hitch, he said. In the Nilgiris about 10,000 poor people will benefit.

Adverting to the different ways in which Chief Minister Karunanidhi was championing the cause of Tamils and Tamil, he said that all should enthusiastically celebrate Tamil New Year.

Elaborate arrangements were being made for the World Tamil Semmozhi Conference scheduled to be held in Coimbatore during June.

The Minister expressed his happiness over the NDCMPU turning the corner after many years.

The Collector in-charge S.Kuppuswamy, who presided, said that Samathuva Pongal was being celebrated in various offices and added that many of them had been illuminated.

The General Manager, NDCMPU, M.Gnana Guru, welcomed the gathering.

Distribution of certificates of appreciation and gifts to self-help groups marked the occasion.

The Assistant Manager, NDCMPU, A.Kulandaisamy proposed a vote of thanks.
