KARAIKUDI: The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajnath Singh, has urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to withdraw its support to the United Progressive Alliance Government in the wake of unprecedented price rise in the country.
Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday to commemorate the centenary celebrations of Muthuramalinga Thevar and the culmination of the Karaikudi leg of Lotus Yatra, he said, “The people, particularly poor and middle class, face immense sufferings due to spiralling prices of essential commodities. The Government, which has not taken enough steps to control inflation during the last four years, is stating that people should have patience till inflation came down. I ask the DMK in Tamil Nadu to withdraw its support to the Centre if you have real concern about the sufferings of people.”.
Coming down heavily on the Government for its failure to control prices, Mr. Singh said that the BJP would not accept the Government’s wrong propaganda to cite global reasons for inflation. “The USA is the largest importer of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel. India is not a big importer of petroleum products. The rate of inflation in USA is just 3 per cent. But, it is 7 to 8 per cent in India. It shows that the Government is trying to find unfounded reasons for inflation. Hence, it cannot escape from its responsibility.”
Economy in downward trend
Citing that the country’s economy had once again started a downward trend, he said that the Government had completely failed to develop agriculture economy. In fact, the purchasing power of farmers had gone down. Hence, the Government should extend loan to farmers at 4 per cent rate of interest to rejuvenate the agricultural sector. If the BJP came to power, it would provide loans to farmers at 4 per cent interest.
