Police arrested a DMK functionary on charges of having sold a piece of land belonging to the Madurai corporation for a fancy price. Based on a judicial magistrate court directive, the Thilagar Thidal police registered a case against Manimaran of Maninagaram, here on a complaint from Subramani (50) of Navalar Nagar.
The accused is district organiser of the fishermen wing of the DMK. According to the complainant, he purchased a shop from Manimaran for Rs 9.50 lakh not knowing that the land allegedly belonged to the local body in Meenakshi Bazaar.
Investigations suggested that Manimaran had claimed that he had purchased the property in his daughter's name and sold it to the buyer with fake documents giving an impression that the land belonged to them, an officer said.
Thirty persons, who attempted to block the way to the airport here to draw the government's attention to name Madurai airport after Muthuramalinga Thevar, were arrested on Sunday. Police said the agitators, claimed they are members of Thevar Peravai outfit, were secured.
