The meeting hailed his action in upholding moral values and his political decency
CHENNAI: A meeting of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam district secretaries here on Thursday praised the decision of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to ask Chennai Corporation councillors to resign and seek re-election.
A resolution adopted at the meet, chaired by Mr. Karunanidhi, said that the State Election Commission on its own had ordered and conducted repoll in 17 booths. Following a High Court directive, repoll was ordered in 27 booths. After this came the split verdict, with one judge dismissing the petition and another directing repoll in 99 wards. In this situation, the case would be referred to a third judge, and, even on his verdict, one could approach the Supreme Court. Despite these possibilities, the Chief Minister, "for the first time in Indian history, without any delay," had announced that councillors in all the 99 wards would resign and seek re-election. The meeting praised his action in upholding moral values and his political decency.
In another resolution, the district secretaries meet thanked people for celebrating Pongal with fervour.
