Police seize 20 vehicles without valid permits used for election work
Incident took place when victim was returning home
KANCHEEPURAM: The DMK nominee for ward no. 11 of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union, Rajendran of Anchur village, sustained injuries after he was attacked by a nine-member-gang on Sunday night.
According to police, the incident took place around 8-15 p.m. when the victim was returning home in his car.
The vehicle was intercepted by the gang at the entrance of Palla Street and damaged. Rajendran, who sustained injuries, was rushed to the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital and admitted as in-patient.
The Chengalpattu police have registered a case and are investigating.
Meanwhile, police have seized 20 vehicles used for election `propaganda' by the candidates without valid permits during the last three days.
Out of the 20 vehicles, 6 vehicles were reportedly used by Desiya Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidates; two by Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) candidates and one each by the AIADMK and Congress candidates.
Kumar (26), of Pudupattinam Kuppam, was taken into preventive custody by Kalpakkam police on October 8, who said he planned to instigate violence on polling day. Egambaram of Vengadamangalam, contesting for the village panchayat president's post, filed a complaint with Thazhambur police.
He stated that on Saturday night some miscreants had damaged the car used for his election work.
Apart from damaging the vehicle, the miscreants took away the car audio system and election materials from the car.
The Thazhambur police have registered a case and are investigating.
DMK cadre remanded
Neelakandan of Kottavakkam Colony, a DMK cadre, was remanded to 15-days judicial custody on charges of assaulting an AIADMK cadre, Ramachandran of the same area.
According to police, the incident was a sequel to a wordy duel between Ramachandran and a candidate, Dhanapal of Kottavakkam village, who was contesting for the village panchayat president's post.
Neelakandan, who intervened in the brawl in support of Dhanapal who was also a PMK cadre, assaulted Ramachandran with a log.
Ramachandran was admitted to the District Government Headquarters Hospital, Kancheepuram.
Kancheepuram police registered a case and arrested Neelakandan.
