Pandemonium broke out in the corporation council hall as councillors of the DMK and the AIADMK scuffled with each other in the middle of a meeting here on Wednesday to discuss creation of awareness of Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) and its benefits.

The DMK councillors expressed dissent over issuance of application forms to AIADMK councillors in a partial manner to avail loan subsidy under the scheme.

Presided over by Mayor L. Sasikala Pushpa, the meet aimed at sensitising the councillors to the advantages of the scheme and availing subsidy loans to promote self-employment among self-help group members.

Trouble started when the DMK councillor G. Anandaraj of ward number 45 expressed anger over the presence of Shenbagaselvan, former AIADMK councillor and husband of Padmavathy, present councillor of ward no. 11 from the AIADMK, in the council hall.

Mr. Shenbagaselvan, who sat as a spectator in the hall, walked up to Mr. Anandaraj, who was quarrelling with Ms. Padmavathy over the “partial distribution” of such forms, and “assaulted” him, sources said. Subsequently, the councillors from both parties exchanged blows and in the melee, Mr. Anandaraj’s shirt was torn, the sources added. He was admitted to a private hospital.

A. Kottur Raja, DMK councillor of ward number 30 and party whip, said it was unfortunate that the application forms had been issued without printing seals of authorities and serial numbers.
