NAGERCOIL: The activists of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazagam observed fast unto death at Palapallam on

Thursday to urge the Government to take immediate steps to unite Gopika of Nadupidakai and her children with her husband.

According to sources, Gopika along with her children and parents resorted to agitation for the past 17 days against her in-laws as she was not allowed to enter her husband’s house.

She was also given support by various political parties that held demonstrations.

The parties include AIADMK, DMDK, Marxists etc. However, the police is yet to take any step to reunite both Gopika and Kannan. Hence, the activists of DMDK began their fast unto death agitation led by the district secretary, Jeganathan.

Ex-serviceman committs suicide

Ramanatha Pillai (45) of Arukuvilai near Nagercoil, committed suicide by setting himself ablaze in his bedroom on Thursday.

According to police, he was an ex-serviceman who got his voluntary retirement 20 days back and returned to his native village.

In the meantime he poured kerosene and set himself ablaze.

As the bedroom was locked from inside, no one could rescue him immediately.When the door was broken they found the charred body of Ramanathapillai.

The police that said he took this extreme step owing to family dispute.

Further investigation is going on.
