CHENNAI: Four DMDK candidates who won in the Chennai Corporation Council by-elections were sworn in as councillors on Wednesday.
The DMDK councillors did not attend the oath-taking ceremony held in the Council Hall in Ripon Building on Monday, when 96 councillors of the DMK-led alliance were sworn in.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni administered the oath to the DMDK councillors in his office on Wednesday. Five candidates from Vijayakanth's DMDK emerged victorious in the local body by-elections.
However, P. Sardar of ward 27 defected to the DMK a day after the results were announced. DMDK members handed over a letter, purportedly written by Mr. Sardar, to the Commissioner on Monday.
The letter, dated February 3 and addressed to Mr. Vijayakant, said that Mr. Sardar would not defect to another party upon winning and he would resign from the councillor's post if he did so.
A senior official of the Chennai Corporation said the document was not legally valid as a resignation letter.
