`Murasu' is their first choice followed by `bell' and `ring'

KANCHEEPURAM: The symbol `murasu' (drums) is reportedly mentioned as the first choice of election symbol by the nominees of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam fielded by the party in Kancheepuram district.

Enquiries with the district election department officials revealed that all the nine candidates have mentioned `murasu' (drums) as their first choice followed by `bell' and `ring' since their party comes under the registered party category.

According to election rules, only the recognised political parties i.e. national and State level parties can have specific symbols allotted them and all other parties including the registered political parties and un-registered parties had to choose a symbol from the free symbol list.

However, if a registered party desiring to have a single symbol to be used in all the constituencies in a State, it has to borrow a symbol from an existing-and-still recognised party in any other State and produce an affidavit in this regard to the Election Commission within three days from the date of notification. After going through the request, the Election Commission might accept and allot the said symbol or reject the request, official sources said.
