A total of 173 Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) cadre were arrested by the police here on Thursday when they tried to stage a demonstration near Panagal building protesting against what they alleged was foisting of false cases by the State government against their leader Vijaykanth. The police had not given permission for the agitation. The cadres were arrested by the police as they arrived in trucks in batches. Arrested include S. Ramanathan, Thanjavur south district secretary. They alleged that their leader had been harassed by the State government.
KARUR: The police took into custody 119 cadres belonging to the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) for attempting to stage a road roko in Karur on Thursday criticising the State government for its “vindictive attitude towards DMDK leaders and cadres”. Among the arrested were eight women.
DMDK office-bearers had sought permission to stage a demonstration in front of the Taluk Office on the Jawahar Bazar Road for staging a demonstration against the State government for “foisting cases” against the DMDK cadres and founder president Vijaykanth.
However, defying police and authorities, cadres and local office-bearers of the party assembled in front of the party office at 80 Feet Road and tried to stage a demonstration and road roko.
The police teams swiftly swung into action and picked up 119 agitating cadres, including the eight women, and took them away. District secretary of the party N.S. Krishnan told presspersons that the cadres were only highlighting what he termed “undemocratic and vindictive attitude” of the AIADMK government towards DMDK cadres and leader. The ruling dispensation was not able to stomach the “just voice of the people” and was throttling the voice of democracy, he said as the reason for the protest agitation.
PUDUKOTTAI: Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam who attempted to stage “road roko” courted arrest near the New Bus Stand here on Thursday. Led by N. Jahir, district secretary of the party, they protested the “foisting of false cases” against DMDK founder Vijayakanth by the State government. Singamuthu, town secretary, S. Kathiravan, district treasurer, courted arrest.
PERAMBALUR: Sixty-nine DMDK cadre, including five women, were rounded up when they attempted to stage demonstration at Palakkarai in the town. Durai Kamaraj, district secretary of the party, led the agitation. All of them were later released in the evening.
ARIYALUR: The police rounded up 150 DMDK cadre, including two women, when they attempted to organise demonstration in front of the taluk office here.
