“Police foisted cases against Vijaykanth at the behest of State govt.”
Around 321 Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) cadre were arrested in the district on Thursday for staging demonstrations without obtaining police permission. The protestors denounced the alleged foisting of false cases against the party’s founder-president and opposition leader Vijaykanth.
Fifty cadre, led by Tirunelveli city secretary Mohamed Ali, were arrested at Tirunelveli Junction.
At Cheranmahadevi, the party’s Tirunelveli east district secretary Ganesh Kumar Adityan and 142 others, including 17 women, were arrested.
A total of 128 cadre, including a woman, were arrested at Sankarankoil.
A total of 115 DMDK cadre courted arrest in Tuticorin district — 70 in Kovilpatti — for staging demonstrations.
Tuticorin South district secretary N. Shanmugaraja, who led the demonstration near the old corporation office building on WGC Road here, said 27 cases had been registered against Mr. Vijaykanth. The cases were foisted by the police at the behest of the State government. He also condemned the police for “implicating their leader in an attempt-to-murder case involving a lawyer in Kanyakumari district.”
Sixty four DMDK cadre were arrested in Nagercoil and Thuckalay for staging demonstrations.
