Following the defamatory case filed against him in the District Sessions Court here, Vijayakant, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagm and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, has obtained an interim stay from the Madras High Court.
Otherwise, he should have appeared before the court on Friday. After producing the copy of the stay order in the District Sessions Court here, the members of the advocates’ wing of the party, led by district president N.Sundara Moorthy staged a protest demonstration in front of the court on Friday.
They condemned the “false case” foisted on the party leader Vijayakant. Mr Sundara Moorthy told this correspondent that the Public Prosecutor P. Ravindran had recently filed a defamation case against Vijayakant recently arraigning him in a purportedly defamatory speech delivered by the actor-turned-politician against the State government.
In the petition Mr Ravindran had stated that Mr Vijayakant during his public meeting held in the Manjakuppam grounds here on August 28, 2012 delivered a speech defamatory in character…with a motive to tarnish the image of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
According to the Public Prosecutor, in the speech Mr Vijayakant had shown the government in a poor light by stating that post-Thane cyclone the government had done nothing.
The Public Prosecutor also alleged that Mr Vijayakant had further stated that the funds released for cyclone relief were swindled by the ruling party members and officials. It was the contention of the Public Prosecutor that Mr Vijyakant had uttered these words with ulterior motive
