ERODE: Fighting against all odds, a boy from a poor weaver's family in Anthiyur has emerged as a district topper in the government schools category in Erode.

R. Nanthakumar, student of the Anthiyur Boys Government Higher Secondary School, secored 1048 marks in the higher secondary examinations and secured the first rank in the district. The boy's parents, S. Raju and R. Kanagavalli, are handloom weavers. “I understood from the very beginning of my school days that I have to study well if have to come up in life,” he says.

“As I cannot afford special coaching, I made use of these tests to prepare for the examination. My teachers gave me special attention after seeing my performance in the exams,” he says. Nanthakumar aspires to become a doctor. “I have decided to become a doctor, when my mother was diagnosed with jaundice. Since she was at an advanced stage, it took a lot of time to recover. So I wish to work in the areas of preventive medicine and diagnosis,” he says.
