SALEM: The district administration started distributing rice under the Rs. 2 a kg scheme in fair price shops on Saturday.
A large number of family cardholders thronged the shops to receive rice.
The district had 1,253 fair price shops. About 8.72 lakh families would benefit from the scheme. Of these, 85,502 families were under the Andhiyodhaya Annayojana scheme. These families were also eligible for rice at the rate of Rs. 2 a kg, officials said.
18 tonnes a month
The administration would distribute around 18 tonnes of rice a month to the family cardholders under the scheme. It had sent sufficient quantity of rice to all the fair price shops in the district, officials said.
