Collector V. Sampath has directed the Education Department and school headmasters to ensure that all students belonging to the minority communities had “zero balance” accounts opened in banks within a week.

He was speaking at a review meeting held on disbursement of scholarships to the minority community students here on Saturday. Mr. Sampath said the government had instructed all schools to help the minority community students to open bank accounts for depositing scholarship amount. According to statistics, of 8,450 minority students enrolled in 293 schools in the district, so far 4,078 students in 187 schools had opened bank accounts. The Collector said the remaining schools should also fall in line and only then financial assistance should be extended to students.

Mr. Sampath put the onus on the headmasters to keep track of these accounts and ensure that they are kept alive. If there are dropouts at schools, the Education Department should be informed and follow-up action taken, he added.
