PUDUKOTTAI: The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tiruchi Range, P. Balasubramanian, was among the 170 persons who were injured at a ‘jallikattu’ at Sri Muthumariamman Temple in Narthamalai on Sunday.

The ritual was performed amidst police security and after a review of the arrangements in accordance with a directive by the Supreme Court last week. The Supreme Court’s directive followed an appeal by a petition filed on behalf of the villagers. Mr. Balasubramanian had gone to the village to oversee the arrangements for the ‘jallikattu.’ As he was having a discussion with Superintendent of Police P. Moorthy, one of the bulls which managed to run out of the grounds, ran helter-skelter, injuring Mr. Balasubramanian. Soon, the police officials and the Divisional Fire Officer Rajasekaran rushed to his rescue.

Four persons who suffered serious injuries in the ‘jallikattu,’ were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital.
