: Conservancy workers hired on contract basis staged a dharna at the main entrance of Tirunelveli Railway Junction on Tuesday to highlight their demands.
The protestors said their colleague one Arumugam suffered asphyxiation recently when he was working at Tirunelveli Railway Junction under hostile conditions without any safety gear. After being admitted to the hospital, Arumugam died. Since this avoidable death happened due to the unsafe working conditions, the contract conservancy workers should be given all safety gears.
Moreover, adequate compensation should be given to the family of Arumugam.
The conservancy workers should not be compelled to remove human waste from the rail track with their hands. Modern gadgets should be given to the conservancy workers for this purpose.
Salary should be given on the 5th day of every month and welfare measures such as Employees State Insurance Scheme and Employees’ Provident Fund should be extended to them also, the protestors said.
