A large number of pilgrims and Sivachariars on Monday thronged various temples, including Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, on the occasion of Maha Sivarathiri.

Most of the temples, even small ones, were decorated with lights and flowers on the occasion.

The Sivachariars and ardent devotees of Lord Siva observed a day-long fast as per tradition. Long queues were seen in Sri Ramanathaswamy temple which attracted devotees from different parts of the country. They began the night prayer at the temple by performing rituals and pujas like pouring of milk over the Siva lingam. The Siva temple in Ramanathapuram also attracted a large number of devotees.

Several community shrines (kula theivam temples) were flooded with devotees.
