The development of master plan for Puducherry will be further delayed as the Puducherry Town and Planning Authority has now decided to float a fresh tender to select the consultant for preparing the plan.

Though a consultant was selected through bidding a few months ago, the Authority found the agency lacking in several aspects, according to a senior government official.

“Hence we have decided to float a fresh expression of interest. This time, we have floated the expression of interest at the national level so that we get better candidates,” the official said.

The last master plan, which was developed in 1997 for an area of 41.91 square km, has almost become outmoded.

Taking into account the growth witnessed in the last decade, the Authority in accordance with the provisions of the Puducherry Town and Country Planning Act, 1969 plans to develop a Comprehensive Master Plan for the urban area of Puducherry for an area of 77.26 km.

The work to be entrusted to the consultant included preparation of scientific base map using satellite imagery, preparation of existing land use map/registers using the scientific map, collection of primary and secondary data, conducting surveys related to existing conditions and development uses and preparation of Comprehensive Development Plan and Zonal Development plan.

The consultancy would be selected in three months, the official said, adding that the agency would be given 10 months to prepare the report.
