Mettur water to reach Grand Anicut on June 16
NAGAPATTINAM: Desilting of irrigation channels and small rivers in the Cauvery delta region of the district is being carried out on a war footing, said S.Duraimurugan, Minister for Public Works at Mayiladuturai on Friday.
Talking to media persons after inspecting the desilting work at Tiruchitrambalam, Thirugari channel on the Mayiladuturai Vaitheeswarankovil Road, Kondathur, Manikaranayar and Velavan canal, he said the work would be completed in a week's time.
Mr. Duraimurugan said that about Rs.10 crore would be spent on desilting of channels in the Cauvery and Vennar river divisions.
He pointed out that 66 desilting work were taken up in the Cauvery division between Mayiladuturai and Sirkazhi at a cost of Rs.1.82 crore.
He said that Mettur water, to be released on June 12, would reach the Grand Anicut on June 16 and pointed out that all steps were taken to ensure easy flow of water to the tail-end area.
The Minister said he would hold discussions with the irrigation officials on the introduction of turn system after the release of water from Mettur reservoir for irrigation of Cauvery delta region.
U. Mathivanan, Minister for Dairy Development, Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, and top irrigation officials accompanied Mr Duraimurugan.
