CHENNAI: The Desia Paadhukaappu Kazhagam (National Protection Party) on Saturday said that it had decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of V. Kalyanam, who assisted Mahatma Gandhi during the last five years of his life.
“Clean politics is necessary for a healthy democracy that will protect the interests of the deprived and downtrodden in particular. Politics cannot be cleansed without clean people getting into it,” Mr. Kalyanam (87) stated in a press release here.
He said that in recent years, the electoral battle in the country had more focus on political bickerings and personal ambitions of politicians and their family members, which had made the common man feel unhappy and helpless.
Mr. Kalyanam said the struggle to restore Gandhian standards in public life could not be delayed further.
N.S. Venkataraman, chemical engineer and founder-trustee of Nandini Voice For The Deprived, a Chennai-based NGO, will be the party’s candidate in the South Madras constituency.
