An electric locomotive derailed near Erode Railway Junction early on Saturday morning, disrupting train traffic for about four hours and leading to the cancellation of three passenger trains.

Railway workers were carrying out shunting operations for a train at around 2.50 a.m. when the incident occurred. Erode – Jolarpet passenger, Mettur – Erode passenger and Erode – Mettur passenger were cancelled. Rameswaram-Okha express, Kannur-Yesvantpur express, Kanyakumari - Jammu Tawi express, Coimbatore – Chennai Intercity express, Mangalore – Chennai West Coast express, Coimbatore – Thanjavur Jan Shatabdi express and Tea Garden express were running late. The traffic along the mainline was restored at around 7.25 a.m., senior officials here said.
