A Deputy Tahsildar was attacked by a gang when he took under his custody a tractor and the driver engaged in illegal sand quarrying at Nallirukkai kanmoi near Uthirakosamangai on Tuesday night.

On being alerted by Tahsildar K.Kathiresan about illegal sand quarrying at the kanmoi, Deputy Tahsildar (Mines) A.Selvaraj visited the area along with a contractor in the latter’s car around 11 p.m. on Tuesday and found some persons illegally quarrying sand using two tractors and an excavator.

The official caught one person and seized his tractor while the others fled the scene. When they were bringing him and the tractor to the Uthirakosamangai police station, a 10-member gang waylaid them at Alangulam village and tried to offload the sand from the tractor, Mr.Selvaraj said.

When he tried to prevent the gang from offloading the sand, the tractor driver attacked him with a stick. Immediately, the official and the contractor rushed to the Uthirakosamangai police station and lodged a complaint, Mr.Selvaraj said.

Mr.Selvaraj, who got admitted to the Government Headquarters Hospital here on Wednesday, said it appeared that the tractor driver belonged to Alangulam village and mobilised the support of others. He suffered bruises at the right hand. Deputy Director (Mines) C.Chokalingam and Mr.Kathiresan visited him at the hospital.
