Indian democracy is under threat, CPI leader R. Nallakannu told a meeting here on Thursday. The Left and secular parties should join hands in strengthening the democracy, he said.

More than 150 of the 534 Members of Lok Sabha Are crorepatis, he said and alleged that they were using Parliament to suit their needs.

The money Central and State governments pumped into schemes hardly reached the beneficiaries. A few persons pocketed the money and stashed them abroad.

The governments had privatised health and education, two crucial sectors that benefited the poor. At this rate, the country's administration would be concentrated in the hands of a few powerful people. On rehabilitation of Tamils in Sri Lankan, Mr. Nallakannu said that it was quite unfortunate that the Centre extended a red carpet welcome to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, accused of committing war crimes.
