In the run up to Deepavali, Fire and Rescue Services Department here has proposed to conduct demonstrations on safe bursting of crackers at 18 locations, including 10 in the city, in Tiruchi district in the coming days.
The precautionary measures needed to be taken before bursting crackers would be driven home to the general public. Fire fighters have made a start by conducting demonstrations at three places, including one in a school and another in a college, in the city.
A majority of the demonstrations are planned to be conducted in schools to put across safety messages to students, said Syed Mohamed Sha, Divisional Fire Officer, Tiruchi.
Fire fighters have drawn up a list of precautionary measures to be conveyed to the public on safe ways to celebrate the festival of lights.
Public would be told to desist from bursting crackers at traffic junctions, and in front of hospitals and old age homes so as not to cause disturbances to patients and senior citizens, Mr. Sha said. Encompassing eight fire stations at different places in the district, Tiruchi fire division recorded a total number of 61 fire calls on Deepavali and on its eve in 2012.
A majority of the fire accidents reported on the festival day and on its eve last year were because of firing of rockets, department officials said. In 2011, the number of fire accidents was only two.
Mr. Shah said fire tenders would be deployed at Gandhi Market, Singarathope, Woraiyur, and Tiruverambur on the eve of the festival to act immediately upon receipt of fire calls.
