VILLUPURAM: Total bandh was observed at Chinna Salem to protest against the omission of the Assembly constituency in the delimitation proposals. Trade and commercial establishments, and educational institutions remained closed.

Autorickshaws, taxis and vans were off the road. Two groups, one led by DMK MLA, T. Udhayasooriyan (Chinna Salem), and another by Usha Murugesan, vice-president of the town unit of the AIADMK, obstructed road traffic at different places. Originally, the bandh call was given at a meeting held here recently in which the political leaders and traders participated.

As per the notification of the Delimitation Commission, Chinna Salem Assembly constituency will be dismantled and the places will be annexed both to the proposed Kallakurichi (SC) constituency and the existing Sankarapuram constituency.

For instance, more than 60 villages, including Dhaniyamur, Ulagankathan, Kandalai and Naiynarpalayam, will be annexed to the Kallakurichi constituency, and over 50 villages in the hills, including Vellimalai, Kachirayapalayam, Panmalai and Eduthavainatham, will be added to the Sankarapuram seat.

The people were insistent that the constituency should be retained, and the commission should neither bifurcate it nor drop it from the list of Assembly seats.
