People apprehensive about walking in these areas after dark

Several incidents of theft have been reported

Anti-social elements take advantage of the darkness

SALEM: The delay on the part of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board installing power supply cables for street lighting has left the people in ATC Nagar and a few other colonies here to face problems.

The Salem Corporation had paid a sum of Rs. 29,815 to the board about three years ago for putting up power cables to provide street lighting from ATC Nagar to Udaichakarai. But the board had not made any efforts to put up power cables.

Residents have complained that they were facing difficulties in accessing streets that lack street lights during the night hours.

Women and children find it unsafe to walk after dark in these areas. Several incidents of theft have been reported.

Anti-social elements are carrying out their activities using the darkness as cover.

“Lack of enough streetlights provides criminals an excellent getaway. It also leads to accidents,” citizens pointed out.

The board and the Salem Corporation have totally neglected the ATC Nagar and the nearby residential colonies, they added.

Citizens urged the officials concerned to take immediate steps to install street lights in their area.
