Security has been stepped up to avoid untoward incidents

SALEM: Though the Salem city and its suburbs witness continuous rain, it has not deterred people from stepping out of their homes to buy goodies for their loved ones for this Deepavali.

Thousands of people visited the shops in Bazaar Street, First Agraharam and Second Agraharam on Saturday and Sunday despite the city witnessing intermittent showers. Sweet stalls and garment showrooms in the city witnessed huge crowds of people busy doing their last minute Deepavali shopping.

Many traders have made attractive offers to woo customers. But the cracker dealers faced problems due to continuous rains, which kept many people away from their shops.

The stalls in many towns in the district including Attur and Mettur also received huge crowds.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements in crowded areas in the district to ensure no untoward incident takes place during the festive season. Security was tightened in railway stations, bus stands and vital installations.

Patrolling was intensified in all the places.
