The deadline for dwellers of the 749 huts at Pallipalayam to move to safer places from their present locality on the banks of river Cauvery has been extended to July 31 this year.
The decision was taken by District Collector S. Madumathi and Revenue Minister P. Thangamani after visiting the site where the Rs. 497 crore Bhavani Kattalai Barrage II (BKB II) project is underway at Pallipalayam on Saturday.
Earlier this month the last date for residents of that locality – upstream and down stream Pallipalayam railway line near Cauvery – to move to safer places was fixed as May 21, 2011.
Officials who inspected the construction said that the deadline was extended following requests made by the dwellers seeking alternative patta lands from the government where they could have their houses after vacating their present houses.
They have been living there for more than three-and-a-half decades, following which their request was taken to consideration, they said.
The Minister urged officials to locate an alternative piece of land for them.
Superintendent Engineer for Hydro Projects N. Annamalai toldThe Hinduthat the BKB II project – construction of the Odapalli to Vendipalayam bridge for a stretch of about 350 meters that comprises of a 30 M.W. power plant across the river – is expected to be completed by the end of July while the power generation would commence by mid August this year.
He noted that the project comprises of two units (15 M.Watt each) of which one has been commissioned and is undergoing testing whereas erection of the second one is fact progressing.
“On completion of the 12.5 meter wide bridge it would produce 30,000 units of electricity an hour till the level of water in the bridge stays nine meters deep,” the SE said.
He stated that the level of water would rise to a depth of five metres by June 20 and reach the expected capacity of nine metres by the beginning of August. The total project cost Rs. 497 crore includes Interest During Construction that stands at Rs. 100 crore.
