In a daring burglary at a pawn broker shop located on the main road in Pallathur near Karaikudi around 175 sovereigns of gold ornaments were burgled.

The incident comes in the wake of police intensifying checks in different places of Karaikudi and the nearby areas. Sources said the burglary came to light when the owner of the pawn broker shop M. Anand tried to open the shutters. Noticing that the locks were broken, he informed the police about the burglary.

The entire stock of jewels kept in the shop was taken away by the gang.

It was not immediately known about the number of persons involved in the crime. The police, who rushed to the spot, conducted preliminary enquiry with Mr. Anand and others. A sniffer dog was also pressed into service and the forensic experts also took finger prints from the scene of the crime.

Superintendent of Police Panneerselvam, who visited the spot, said all efforts were being made to collect clues about the gang involved in the burglary and special teams have been formed.
