An adi-dravidar and adivasi artistes dance and music festival was organised under the aegis of the Department and Art and Culture here on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the festival, the Commissioner of Art and Culture, S.S. Jawahar, said that all the six zonal centres of the department are in the process of getting own buildings.
The Jawahar Siruvar Manrams which are functioning in various parts of the state to inculcate artistic talent and aesthetic fervour among children in the age group 5 to 16 is imparting training in 15 disciplines.
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe artistes are being trained in folk dances and various forms of music with the payment of a stipend.
The Nilgiris Collector, Archana Patnaik, who presided, said that the district is synonymous with tribal culture. It should be preserved and the younger generation should ensure that it is zealously safeguarded.
Assistant Director, Department of Art and Culture, P. Hemanathan, welcomed the gathering.
The Chairman, Udhagamandalam Municipal Council, K. Sathyabama, and the Chairman, District Panchayat, A. Menaka, were among those who participated.
