A 19-year-old Dalit youth has sustained spinal fracture after an alleged assault by the police.

The youth, M. Siva alias Sathyakumar, a resident of Nagamalai Pudukottai here, has sent a representation to the Director General of Police seeking action against the police who assaulted him. A Madurai-based human rights organisation, after a field investigation on the incident, has recommended action against the police and compensation for the alleged victim’s family. Siva claimed that five policemen from Rameswaram Town and Avaniapuram stations barged into his house on April 13 at 2 a.m. The police, who barged into his house wearing civilian clothes, assaulted him and took him into custody, he added.

The police had booked him under Sections 454 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code, in a theft case in Rameswaram and detained him. “I was taken to the police stations in Perungudi, Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram Bazaar and Avaniapuram for interrogation. I was subjected assaulted brutally in all the places. The police demanded Rs. 70,000 from my family to close the case, besides passing obscene remarks on my mother and wife,” Siva claimed. He was released after obtaining bail from the Judicial Magistrate court in Rameswaram on May 6.

Siva, a daily wage labourer, took treatment at the Government Rajaji Hospital after sustaining internal injuries during the assault. The hospital has mentioned in the Medico Legal Case summary that Siva was assaulted.
