Over 851 people have been infected with HIV: Collector

NAGAPATTINAM: AIDS-afflicted deserve humane treatment and not social stigma was the message that was conveyed during the observance of World AIDS Day here in the district on Tuesday.

Over 851 people have been infected with HIV, stated Collector C.Muninathan at the AIDS awareness rally on Tuesday.

Presiding over the World AIDS Day oath, Mr. Munianathan flagged off a cycle rally in pursuit of AIDS awareness campaign.

Extempore, poetry and essay writing, and debating competitions were held in observance of AIDS awareness campaign in the district.

AIDS testing and counselling centres are functional at all seven government hospitals and 12 primary health centres in the districts. These centres staffed by a doctor, nurse and a health worker are equipped with counselling assistance. Treatment to AIDS affected pregnant women is provided to prevent mother to foetal transmission of the virus. Further, over 342 AIDS infected persons were being provided group treatment in the district.

A.Annadurai, District Revenue Officer, V.Poorva Devi, Joint Director, Health, R.Veerchami, Chief Educational Officer, Yamunabai, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, were among those present.
