The stand-off between Cuddalore Judicial Magistrate III Pugalendi and an Inspector of Police (attached to the District Crime Branch) Karthikeyan that took place on Tuesday made lawyers here go on an indefinite strike.

Emergency meeting

The Cuddalor Bar Association that convened an emergency meeting here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of S. Arunachalam adopted two resolutions: urging the authorities to arrest Mr. Karthikeyan for misbehaving in the court and causing disgrace to the Magistrate; and, submitting petitions to the Cuddalore District Principal and Sessions Judge K. Uthirapathy to inform the Madras High Court to take follow-up action.

Mr. Arunachalam told this correspondent that the Inspector seemed to be under influence of alcohol and some lawyers who were present in the court vouched for it. They even raised a demand that the Inspector should be subjected to a medical test.

Mr. Arunachalam said he proposed to convene the Cuddalore District Bar Federation to discuss the follow-up action.
