MADURAI: Sugarcane crushing commenced at the national cooperative sugar mills, Alanganallur, near here on Wednesday.
The Special Officer of the mills, R. Nandagopal, said that it had been proposed to crush 1.80 lakh tonnes of sugarcane this season. Like in the previous season, Rs.1,505.20 would be paid per tonne to the growers and the mill would reimburse the transport charges.
It is likely that the Centre and State governments might announce a good price for the sugarcane being grown this season. Hence, he appealed to the farmers to raise more sugarcane.
An official release said that loans were available for farmers for setting up drip irrigation and subsidies were also offered. Power would be generated soon and it was expected to produce 15 mega watt every day. The earnings from distribution of power would be shared among the farmers.
Mr. Nandagopal further said that for productive crushing at the cooperative sugar mills, adequate farm workers and vehicles were being readied at different locations. He expressed the hope that farmers would be benefitted by this timely action.
Madurai District Central Cooperative Bank General Manager Ramanathan, Joint Director (Agriculture) Sevugaperumal, farmers’ association representatives Palanichamy, Meenakshi sundaram, Abbas and Adimoolam were present on the occasion.
