Former Chennai mayor M. Subramanian on Friday initiated criminal proceedings against the incumbent Saidai S. Duraisamy for defamation.
Mr. Subramanian appeared in person and lodged a complaint with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), M. Gopal. After receiving the complaint, the CMM adjourned the case to October 22.
In his complaint, Mr. Subramanian alleged that in a recently-held corporation council meeting, Mr. Duraisamy made a statement alleging that he and his party leader M.K. Stalin had committed financial irregularities during their tenure as mayors. The accusations levelled by him were highly defamatory and such allegations were made to tarnish the popular image of them.
The complainant cited editors of newspapers as witnesses in the case.
