A remand prisoner allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the Puzhal Central Prison on Tuesday.
According to police sources, R. Kannan (33) of Maduravoyal was arrested on charges of attempting to murder his wife.
He was remanded to judicial custody on December 12, 2010.
He was found hanging from the ceiling in a toilet at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
“He was depressed that none of his family members came to see him in the prison for months.
“Kannan used a piece of cloth to hang himself,” a police official said.
The body was shifted to Stanley Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Woman loses jewellery in autorickshaw
A woman has lodged a complaint with the Valasaravakkam police that she lost her handbag containing 50 sovereigns of jewellery in an autorickshaw.
According to police sources, Latchi (28), a Sri Lankan national residing in Ramakrishna Nagar here, went to a movie with her family.
Fearing theft, she took her gold jewellery along.
Later, the family took an autorickshaw from Vadapalani to Valasaravakkam.
On reaching home, Latchi realised that she had forgotten to take her handbag.
Two youths, who came on a motorcycle, allegedly snatched a three-sovereign chain from a man in K.K. Nagar on Tuesday.
Police said Krishnamurthy (34) was riding a motorcycle when the suspects, who followed him closely, snatched his chain and sped away.
The victim lost balance and fell. The K.K. Nagar police are investigating.
The Kanchi taluk police have arrested five persons on charges of murdering two persons, who were found lying dead near a marriage hall at Thirukalimedu on Sunday night.
According to police, Saravanan of Thirukalimedu was picked up by the police for interrogation after it was learnt that he had given a sum of Rs.20,000 to one of the deceased, Joseph, to complete a real estate deal. Joseph had reportedly failed to honour his commitment.
On interrogation, Saravanan admitted that he and four others approached Joseph on Sunday night when the latter was consuming alcohol with his friend, Vadivelu, near the marriage hall. A wordy duel ensued between Joseph and Saravanan, leading to the murder of Joseph and Vadivelu.
The Kanchi taluk police arrested Saravanan and his friends – Mani, Vijay, Raja and Sathya – all hailing from Thirukalimedu area and remanded them to 15 days judicial custody.
