Man flees with jewellery
Two men who went to a jewellery showroom in Besant Nagar on Saturday robbed a wholesale gold dealer who had come there of 450 grams of gold. One of the accused was caught by the public while the other fled with the jewellery.
Sources with Shastri Nagar police said the incident occurred around 4.15 p.m. at a shop on MG Road when a wholesale gold dealer from Sowcarpet, Arun Trivedi (29), had brought 450 grams of gold to the shop in a bag.
The two men, who had come to the shop, snatched the bag and tried to flee. Trivedi raised an alarm and some onlookers chased the men but managed to catch one of the suspects and hand him to the police. His accomplice fled with the gold, sources added.
An unidentified man robbed a gold chain from a woman outside her house in Thoraipakkam on Saturday.
Police sources said the victim Kuruvammal (52) of Pillaiyar Kovil Street was approached by the culprit who entered inside the compound of her house on the pretext of enquiring about an address.
Suddenly he snatched her chain weighing seven sovereigns and fled by riding pillion on a motorcycle with another man waiting outside the house, sources added.
MKB Nagar police on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old youth on charges of making a phone call to the police control room informing that bombs have been placed in MTC buses plying from Basin Bridge. Police found the call to be hoax.
Police sources said the accused Vignesh of SA Colony, Vysarpadi, had made the call on Friday from a SIM card which he had not been using for a while. After police traced the call to his mobile, he claimed that the SIM card was confiscated by the mother of a girl he was in love with. “We questioned the girl's parents and found out that Vignesh was lying. Therefore we questioned him again and he confessed to the crime,” said Sam Vincent, Inspector, MKB Nagar police station.
Six months ago, Vignesh was warned not to meet the girl. Following this, he had planned to take revenge on the family members of the girl, the Inspector added. Vignesh was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
Student at library questioned
An engineering student who allegedly tried to enter the Anna Centenary Library in Kotturpuram with some metal object on Saturday was intercepted by security personnel. Police detained him for questioning and let him off after sometime.
Police sources said the student from a private engineering college in Poonamallee was found in possession of the metal object that looked like a bullet shell.
